The Dark Star Brewery have started brewing at the new premises, we wish them the best of luck with the site at Partridge Green.

 

Matt Wright, a CAMRA member from Burgess Hill has set up a beer delivery service in Sussex with the aim of making locally brewed ales readily available at home.  He can deliver to your door draught or bottled beers from 12 different local breweries. Full details at http://beermatt.co.uk/

 

Brighton

Hare & Hounds Preston Circus is now called the Hydrant and is selling Harveys.

The Toby in Woodingdean is now operating as a licensed events venue, whatever that is!

London Unity in Islingword Road is selling up to three ales at reasonable prices.

In Freshfield Road Green’s Bar & Restaurant, the Cuthbert as was, is selling Harveys Best.

The Horse & Groom in Islingword Road has re-opened, no details as yet.

The Bristol Bar in Marine Parade is available leasehold for £30,000.

The Greys in Southover Street is available at £45,000.

The I Go Inn has now re-opened, no details available.

Hanover, Queens Park Road and its sister pub The Reservoir are selling a range of three local beers usually including Dark Star. The BAD news is that prices seem to start at £3-10 and rise to at least £3-30 for other beers.

Bees Mouth, Western Road is selling Hophead.

The Temple Bar in Western Road has a good selection of local Ales on (mainly Dark Star and Arundel) but oh the prices....they range between £3.30 and £3.50 for a pint of Ale. The other drinks were a rip off too, fizzy water or should I say Carling, was £3.40 and Guinness was £3.75. All this with music that was far too loud to be enjoyable.

Open House in Springfield Road is selling two varying ales at £3-05 per pint.

The Railway in Ditchling Rise is now The Signalman. Three changing beers plus two ciders are available. Prices are not friendly.

The Lamb & Flag, now masquerading as the Easy Bar, has Arundel Gold.

The Stag in Upper Bedford Street is on the market at £ 21,000 for the lease.

Princess Victoria, Upper North Street, is now called The Florist.

Pub du Vin in Ship Street is stocking 6 different Sussex brewed beers. They are served in pewter tankards.

Pump House is a Nicholson’s pub, has Harveys plus one or 2 guests from seasonal range.

Burgess Hill

Watermill is still selling Goddard’s as its guest beer.

The Woolpack has re-opened and is selling Deuchars IPA at £3-00 plus Old Peculier.

Clayton

The Jack & Jill is selling Dark Star Hophead at £3-25 per pint. It’s 45 pence cheaper in the Stand up!

Henfield

The Gardeners appears to be undergoing conversion to a dwelling.

Hove

The Eclipse, I refuse to use the ridiculous new name, has re-opened and is selling Mild at £2-80 Hadlow at £2-90 and Best at £3-00.

The Portland is to be renamed The Stoneham.

The Providence in Western Road is being eyed by Tesco; do we really need another one?

 

Keymer

The Thatched House is now owned by Brakspear’s, no further details.

Keymer & Hassocks Men’s Club (Adastra Park) has been voted Club of the Year by this branch and sells 4 real ales, including Dark Star Hophead, Fullers London Pride and Young’s best bitter. This is a private members club, but CAMRA members can be signed in on production of a valid membership card.

Lewes

It was good to see Gales Festival Mild on sale at the Lewes Arms. Not so good though to be charged £3-50 per pint, rip off!

Snowdrop is under new management.  There has been a massive clean up and the whole place is much brighter. There is a new menu and they are selling a range of beers. Harveys, Dark Star Whites Rectory and Hepworth’s and have been spotted. There are five pumps.

Elephant and Castle now has 5 pumps, one each for cider and perry, plus 3 beers.

The Constitutional Club will now admit CAMRA members with a valid membership card. Five ales from Harveys, Dark Star and Kings were on sale when I visited. Note that CAMRA members will be asked to pay on music nights.

Portslade

The King’s Head is closed and we hear may be converted into a fish restaurant.

The Stanley Arms continue to offer their “cellar experience” between 7-9 pm every last Monday of the month. If you have ever wondered what goes on in a pub cellar this is your chance to find out and enjoy ales direct from the stillage from around £2-00 a pint plus free nibbles.

The “Little Cricks” has opened, possibly with a new name, again but no real ale we are told.

Rodmell

The Abergavenny Arms has reopened and is to be operated as a “food led pub” Beers are believed to be Harveys BB plus Dark Star Hophead.

Shoreham-by-Sea

The Green Jackets is now under new management. On a recent visit a member was charged £3-15 for a somewhat less than average pint of Harveys.

Buckingham Arms have up to 11 beers on pump. Six regular beers include Greene King St Edmunds, Sharps Doom Bar and Harveys  Best. Five guest ales are usually available plus an occasional cider.

The Crab Tree has re-started the passport scheme, buy four pints and get the next one free. If they are charging Fullers normal prices you will need it!

South Heighton

Some new CAMRA members living in South Heighton, near Newhaven tell us that a visit to the newly reopened and refurbished Hampden Arms is to be recommended.  It has been repainted with care and decorated to a high standard inside with a much needed new ladies toilet.  It is still under Admiral Taverns but the new tenants Dave and Michaela Twaites are villagers who care that their local stays open!  They are tied on their beer sales but continue to have Harvey's Best on with regular guest beer Black Sheep Best and in the festive season Robinsons Mr Scrooge 4.4%.  All have been kept in excellent condition.

Southwick

Pilot is for sale freehold for £250,000. We hear there are plans in the pipeline to convert it into an Indian restaurant.

Albion leasehold is available, free of tie, at £21,000.

The Windmill is still open but planning permission has been granted for conversion and enlargement with rear extension on 3 floors to form 14 flats with 16 car spaces, 6 m/c spaces and 30 cycle spaces.

Pebbles on the Port, Lady Bee Marina, has Harveys Best Bitter.

Uckfield

The Alma has yet another new landlord. This one says he is here for the long term.

Wivelsfield Green

The Pear Tree has reverted to the name Cock Inn and the beer range has improved.
